SEOUL, April 24 (Korea Bizwire)A district in Seoul is launching a project to create a network of Internet of Things (IoT) shared parking spaces to help ease parking shortages in residential areas.

Guro District said Thursday that it will carry out a project to help create parking spaces with Internet of Things sensors on land secured by tearing down fences and gates at houses and in other areas.

During the time when residents are not using their parking space, other residents will be able to park there thanks to a parking sharing app that will be updated with real-time data to indicate available spaces.

Profits will be shared by parking space owners and IoT operators. The district will provide 9 million won (US$7,300) for the creation of a parking space, and 1.5 million won for each additional side, up to a total of 28 million won.

The district is also going to subsidize the cost of installing IoT sensors by up to 300,000 won per unit.

The initiative is likely to be supported by owners of detached houses or townhouses that can create parking spaces by removing fences or gates, and neighborhood living facilities that can share parking spaces with nearby residents at night.

In addition, the district is pushing forward with a number of other projects to improve the parking environment.

Schools, libraries, religious facilities and apartments will receive up to 25 million won in subsidies for improving parking facilities if the annexed parking lot is opened to nearby residents.

Meanwhile, officials will also carry out a project to create parking lots on small plots of land. Various incentives will be offered residents are provided with parking spaces on state-run or private land.

The district will provide up to 2.4 million won in facility installation costs per parking space on the condition that it remains in operation for more than a year, while owners will also receive a share of operating profits and a property tax exemption.
