SUWON, South Korea, Oct 11 (Korea Bizwire) — This year to date, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government has installed fish shelters in an area of 1.64 square kilometers in six locations off Ansan and Hwaseong within its jurisdiction. A government official said on October 11 that the final project to sink artificial fish reefs near the Ippa Islets near Hwaseong City has been completed. Since August, the provincial government has spent 2.7 billion won to create zones for fish to spawn and thrive.
An official responsible for the province’s fishery policy said, “Concrete structures sunk into water 10 to 50 meters below surface can slow the tidal current so that fish can flock, feed, and reproduce. This is a good way for fish to prosper in coastal waters as well as for fishermen operating there.”
According to a survey conducted by the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency last year, artificial fish reefs can increase fish catch 2.7 to 6.3 times than otherwise. Since 1998, the Gyeonggi government has created a total of 56.68 square kilometers of fish sanctuaries with an annual target area of 2 square kilometers.
