Gyeonggi Province Aims to Turn Namhansanseong into Major Tourist Attraction by 2022

SUWON, Oct. 1 (Korea Bizwire)Gyeonggi Province announced yesterday that it was planning to allocate 19.63 billion won to be used to transform Namhansanseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, into a major tourist attraction by 2022.

The province is expected to hold a yearly “cultural festival” in October starting next year, and will hold a “festival commemorating the listing of Hamhansanseong onto the UNESCO World Heritage Site” in June of 2020.

Various programs will be offered during the October cultural festival including trekking, a traditional dress experience and food sampling.

In order to commemorate the listing of the fortress as a Heritage Site that in June of 2014, three days in June 2020 will be designated as “UNESCO listing week” with over 20 programs to slated to take place including a marathon race, a re-enactment of the royal procession, and a symposium, among others.

The province also plans to build a museum on grounds near the fortress measuring 28,582 square meters and two stories high.

The museum will house various exhibits, historical and cultural resources, a performance hall and an experience hall for AR and VR enthusiasts.

Moreover, an installation of lights enhancing the night view of the fortress will be adopted to facilitate night tours to the facilities.

A government official overlooking the Namhansanseong Fortress said that over 3.2 million people visit the fortress yearly.

“We will create new content so that the fortress can become a world-class tourist attraction, promoting the value and reputation of Namhansanseong all over,” said the official.
