Gyeonggi Province to Provide “Phone English” Lessons to Schools

SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Korea Bizwire)The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced that students from select schools will be able to participate in GEPIK (Gyeonggido English Program in Korea), a “Phone English” service starting September 1. 

The program will be for 288 elementary school students from grade four to six and will be offered for free for two months. It was devised as a means of providing access to native English speakers for children whose families may be unable to afford formal English lessons.

Children will be able to speak on the phone with an English teacher for ten minutes after school.

Storytelling, Q&As, describing pictures, and other forms of conversational English will be taught by the teachers.

The province held a workshop for the teachers for five days starting on the August 17.

The Office of Education plans to expand into more schools going forward.
