GOYANG, South Korea, Oct. 7 (Korea Bizwire) – Gyeonggi’s Provincial Government announced Thursday that it will be establishing a smart apartment complex that will help residents boost energy sufficiency.

The endeavor will incorporate energy efficiency and information and communications technologies, with some 1,000 households at the Hoban Vertium Apartment Complex in Goyang benefiting from the new infrastructure.

Each of the apartment units will have a smart metering device, energy-efficient LED lights, and smart plugs installed, an official said, which will provide homeowners with information about which household appliance is using how much electricity, energy consumption patterns, and expected monthly electricity bills, all of which can be checked in real-time on a smartphone.

The provincial government will also provide up to 600,000 won ($538) to those that wish to install photovoltaic power generators, while the city will provide subsidies for installing the equipment at the complex’s public facilities such as daycare and senior citizens’ centers.

LED lights that are to be installed in underground parking lots and apartments will be funded by a private enterprise, which will recoup its investment from the reduced energy costs.

“The key purpose of this project is to bring together concepts of ICT, energy saving, and productivity to create a more energy-efficient model for tenement houses,” said a province official. “We’ll be expanding our venture (to other apartment complexes) next year.”
