GYEONGJU, Oct. 29 (Korea Bizwire) — Gyeongju, a city steeped in a thousand years of history, is preparing to showcase a modern face to the world as South Korea hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 2025.

On Tuesday, the Korea Tourism Organization unveiled a new slate of travel themes to spotlight Gyeongju’s appeal, categorized under time, nature and immersive experiences.

The first theme highlights “a city where classic, retro and contemporary culture converge.” Officials point to the OAR Contemporary Art Museum, an art space situated directly across from the ancient royal tombs of Noseo-dong, that has drawn 180,000 visitors in just six months.

Designed by well-known architect Yoo Hyun-joon, the museum emphasizes harmony with the surrounding burial mounds rather than architectural spectacle.

Nearby, the revitalized streets behind Gyeongju Station offer a glimpse of the city’s lived past, including a former stationmaster’s residence now operating as a café.

The National Museum of Gyeongju, often described as an open-air gallery of Korean heritage, is also a key destination.

Geumjangdae Wetland Park

Nature lovers are encouraged to explore the “Instagram-worthy” landscapes of Gyeongju. Geumjangdae Wetland Park, split by a river that creates starkly contrasting scenery, features a popular boat-themed photo spot.

Farther east, visitors can view the dramatic coastal cliffs of the Yangnam Columnar Joints, a designated natural monument, or stroll through the quiet ginkgo forest in Dorim Village.

Gyeongju World

Thrill-seeking travelers will find “adventure-packed Gyeongju” as the third theme. Gyeongju World, the largest amusement park in the Yeongnam region, offers high-profile roller coasters such as the inverted Phaethon, the towering Draken and the backward-running Valkyrie.

Additional experiences include a 3-kilometer luge track overlooking Bomun Lake and outdoor escape-room games staged among UNESCO-recognized heritage sites like Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae.

“Global attention is turning to Gyeongju ahead of the APEC summit,” said Lee Jae-hoon of the Korea Tourism Organization. “We hope these three themes inspire more domestic and international visitors to discover the city’s diverse charms.”
