SEOUL, July 20 (Korea Bizwire)A study last year showed that men in their 30s comprise the majority of hair loss patients visiting hospitals.

The National Health Insurance Service reported a 10 percent increase in the number of hair loss patients last year (233,000 patients), compared to 2016 (212,000 patients).

Sorted by age, patients in their 30s accounted for the largest share at 22.2 percent (51,751 patients) among all patients. Among them, 33,913 people were male, which was double the number of female patients (17,838).

For those between the ages of 10 and 40, a majority of patients were male. In contrast, female patients formed a majority of the patients who were over 50 years of age.

“An increasing number of hospital visits by young Koreans worried about hair loss doesn’t necessarily mean there is an actual increase in the number of hair loss patients. It also may allude to increasing interest in beauty among them,” said Prof. Cho Nam-joon from NHIS Ilsan Hospital.
