SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Korea Bizwire)Hanwha Aerospace Co., a South Korean aircraft engine maker, is on track to secure anti-drone technology to cope with the threat of unmanned drones.

The company announced on Wednesday that it had invested in Fortem Technologies, Inc., a U.S.-based airspace defense and security specialist, under a Simple Agreement for Future Equity (SAFE) format.

Fortem attracted a total of US$17.8 million in investment, of which about half came from Hanwha Aerospace. U.S. defense giant Lockheed Martin has also invested in the company.

The anti-drone defense system developed by Fortem uses in-house radar with artificial intelligence (AI) software to detect illegal drones and then launches counter-drones to capture and neutralize them with a physical net.

This method has the advantage of avoiding collateral damage from drone debris that can come from in-air destruction.
