SEOUL, Dec. 23 (Korea Bizwire)South Korean shipbuilding, oil refining and machinery conglomerate HD Hyundai said Thursday its shipbuilding units succeeded in developing the country’s first liquid natural gas (LNG)-hydrogen mixed-fuel engine.

Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. and its affiliate Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. jointly announced on the completion of performance tests for a 1.5-megawatt LNG-hydrogen mixed-fuel engine that was developed using in-house technology.

This engine, dubbed HiMSEN, can selectively use diesel fuel and LNG-hydrogen mixed fuel to greatly reduce emissions of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide and fine dust.

The new engine satisfies the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s nitrogen oxide regulation Tier III, proving its excellence in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and methane slip, HD Hyundai said.

When installed in a liquid hydrogen carrier, the engine can reuse the boil-off gas generated during the transportation process as a fuel, thus minimizing the loss of hydrogen during the voyage, the shipbuilding giant added.
