ULLEUNG, Dec. 29 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s eastern island of Ulleung, which gets the heaviest snowfalls in the country, is now home to an under-road heating system to keep an important thoroughfare clear.
The Ulleung County Office invested 200 million won (US$168,500) to set up an under-road heating system on a 100-meter stretch of Ahn Pyong-jeon Road, completing a trial period last Saturday to begin full operation.
The road in question leads to Ulleung Middle School, which integrates four schools in the county, and had been struggling with snow every winter.
The Korea Meteorological Administration reported a massive 54-centimeter snowfall on Saturday and Sunday.
Where the under-road heating system was installed, however, the snow melted quickly without accumulating
“We had to pass the heated road on our way to church on Christmas morning, and were surprised to see that there was no ice on the road,” a local resident said.
