SEOUL, April 28 (Korea Bizwire) – More than 50 children’s products are being recalled after they were found to contain excessive amounts of lead, some of which exceeded the official standard by 166 times.

The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) revealed on April 27 that it ordered the recall of 52 products, ranging from children’s toys to home appliances, after investigating the safety of 654 related goods.

The recalled products included 28 children’s apparel items, four children’s toys, and 15 fluorescent lights.

Three of the four children’s toys exceeded the industry lead standard by more than 166.1 times, and a sharp tip that could injure children was found in one of the four.

One children’s bathtub exceeded the lead standard by 2.9 times, and levels of Phthalate plasticizer, which can disturb the endocrine system, were found to be four times higher than government standards in a baby-walker.

The fifteen fluorescent lights had previously-approved components deliberately misplaced, causing extreme flickering that could affect eyesight.

An electric grill was remodeled to have its thermostat removed and its temperature fuse altered, which could increase the risk of fire.

The KATS has made all information regarding the recalled products available to the public on its website, www.safetykorea.kr. It will also register the products’ barcodes with the ‘Harmful Product Sales Blocking System’ to stop further distribution.

Companies must collect all defective products from stores in accordance with consumer product safety laws.

Consumers can report offenders to KATS (043-870-5421) or to the Korea Products Safety Association (02-890-8300) upon the discovery of any of the mentioned products.
