SEOUL, July 30 (Korea Bizwire)Highway idle spaces, including the green spaces around interchanges and junctions as well as abandoned roads, will be used as locations for the establishment of logistics facilities, the transport ministry said Wednesday.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the state-run Korea Expressway Corp. will expand logistics infrastructure by making use of highway idle spaces as locations for logistics facilities as part of efforts to better meet the sharp increase in logistics demand resulting from the outbreak of the coronavirus.

After making exploration and field research of 51 highway idle spaces, they selected 34 spaces (about 1.04 million square meters) as candidate areas for the establishment of logistics facilities.

The candidate areas consist of 18 spaces each with acreage below 30,000 square meters and 16 spaces with acreage of over 30,000 square meters.

By region, the candidate areas consist of 15 spaces in metropolitan areas and 19 spaces in non-metropolitan areas.

A tender notice was issued on July 10 for a feasibility study on the smart logistics business using highway networks.

Based on the result of the feasibility study, a customized business model will be established that can meet the needs of logistics companies. A comprehensive business plan is scheduled to be formulated within the first half of next year.
