Home Ownership Rate Stands at 56 Pct in 2015

SEJONG, Dec. 15 (Korea Bizwire) – The home ownership rate in South Korea came to 56 percent in 2015, data showed Thursday. 

According to the annual data by Statistics Korea, 10.06 million households out of 19.11 million in the country owned homes as of Nov. 1, 2015. 

The latest data indicated that 44 percent of people did not own their homes and lived in “jeonse” homes, or rental arrangements in which renters give landlords a large returnable deposit instead of paying monthly rent. 

By region, the home ownership rate was the highest in the southeastern industrial city of Ulsan with 62.6 percent, while Seoul had 49.6 percent and the administrative city of Sejong had 54.1 percent, the data showed. 

Statistics Korea said 74.5 percent of households owned one home and 25.5 percent owned two or more homes last year. Noticeably, more than 3,000 households in the country possessed more than 51 homes. 

Meanwhile, the number of accommodations owned by individuals came to 14.14 million in 2015, up 3.5 percent from a year earlier, the data showed. 

The agency said that 56.9 percent of the homes were owned by males and 43.1 percent by females in 2015. The rate of female homeowners steadily increased for three years in a row since logging 41.4 percent in 2012. 

Also, 25.9 percent of individual homeowners were in their 50s, followed by those in their 40s and those in their 60s, the data showed, adding that those under the age of 30 increased by 35,000 during the period.
