GEOJU, Dec. 12 (Korea Bizwire) — The 14th Geojedo International Penguin Swimming Festival took place on Saturday.
Some 500 participants were seen at Deokpo Beach in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province wearing only their swimming suits and jumping into the frigid seas.
Under clear skies, the temperature on the day of the festival hovered around 5 degrees Celsius in the morning. Coupled with the cold wind blowing from the sea, people felt 2 to 3 degrees colder.
The festival’s organizing committee set up a net a short distance off the coast and released 500 halibut.
Instead of engaging in a 40-meter swimming contest, participants jumped into the water to catch the halibut with their bare hands.
Ten participants caught halibut carrying a special insignia, winning a 2-gram gold souvenir each.
