HWACHEON, Dec. 30 (Korea Bizwire)Hwacheon County in Gangwon Province is stepping up to commercialize mountain trout.

As prospects look grim for next year’s Hwacheon Sancheoneo (Mountain Trout) Ice Festival due to COVID-19 pandemic, the county is attempting for a breakthrough by developing and distributing food products made with mountain trout.

The county has currently finished development of semi-dried mountain trout for commercial sale, as well as recipes designed by famous Korean chefs.

The county also joined hands with conglomerates to develop high-utility canned mountain trout that can be stored for an extended period of time.

Semi-dried mountain trout packages are made using 300 to 350 grams of mountain trout thoroughly processed and salted through two drying phases before they are sealed in packaging and kept refrigerated.

They can be stored longer and offer a fresher taste while getting rid of fishy odors, the county explained.

Earlier this year, the county held a trout tasting event offering 20 different kinds of cuisines made with mountain trout.

The county plans to distribute semi-dried trout and canned products to local restaurants before the end of this year.
