Hyundai and Kia Announce Autonomous Wheelchair Project

SEOUL, May 28 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Motor Co. and affiliate Kia Corp., the Seoul Museum of Art, and Seoul National University Bundang Hospital are joining hands to develop a self-driving wheelchair.

The initiative comes as a part of efforts to assist vulnerable groups using the autonomous wheelchair technology in development by ZER01NE, an open innovation platform facilitates collaboration among startups and Hyundai Motor Group teams.

The autonomous wheelchair comes with a self-driving system comprising of a lidar sensors, cameras, and an ultrasonic sensor, and an in-wheel system needed to operate the wheelchair attached to each wheel.

Hyundai and Kia plan to assess the utility and convenience of the autonomous wheelchair and reflect various ways to improve ZER01NE’s technology.

Kia plans to run a special program in collaboration with the Seoul Museum of Art to assist disabled persons and vulnerable groups at museum exhibitions.
