SEOUL, Nov. 1 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Motor Co. and SK Networks Co. have joined hands to create new infrastructure for the establishment of an electric car charging station.

Hyundai revealed yesterday that it had signed an MOU with SK Networks that would make this possible.

According to the MOU, Hyundai will develop high-speed electric car chargers that will reduce the time required to charge car batteries, while SK Networks will transform space that current houses its gas stations into electric car charging stations.

More specifically, Hyundai will develop chargers with a capacity of 350 kW that would improve battery efficiency. Most of the batteries equipped in existing electric car models are 50 kW.

When replaced with a 350 kW-type battery, the total time required to charge batteries will be cut by 30 percent.

In addition, Hyundai will launch a smartphone application for the exclusive use of electric car owners that would help reserve and pay for the charging service, among other functions. Hyundai is expected to create its own brand of charging stations.

Meanwhile, SK Networks has plans to build a landmark building by next year that would be used to host electric car charging stations in an area spanning over 3,000 square meters of land currently housing SK-owned gas stations in Seoul’s Gil-dong, Gangdong-gu.

The venue to be the first “mobility lifestyle” charging station in the nation will have over 10 of the latest electric car charging stations.

Customers will be able to spend their time in a space that will exhibit various media content while they wait for their car to charge.
