SEOUL, June 28 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Engineering Co. said Tuesday it held a completion ceremony for South Korea’s tallest modular apartment building, located in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.

Modular buildings are constructed by pre-producing primary construction materials in a factory and assembling them on-site.

The 13-story building comprises 106 homes.

According to the Building Act, buildings over 13 stories tall must have a fire resistance of more than three hours. As a result of this requirement, previous modular buildings were limited to 12 stories.

Hyundai Engineering is the first company to overcome this limitation.

The modular building is part of a state-sponsored R&D project.

The Gyeonggi Housing & Urban Development Corp. initially placed the order for constructing the building, with support from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Hyundai Engineering has also implemented modular technology in the plant industry. In 2021, the company constructed several facilities with modules as part of the construction of the Al Zour LNG Terminal in Kuwait.
