SEOUL, Feb. 1 (Korea Bizwire) – Hyundai Motor Co. said Tuesday it had equipped its all-new Kona subcompact SUV with a new indoor air purification technology.

The technology, dubbed Eco Coating, is developed by Embiome Co., a company that was spun off after being established as an in-house startup.

Without generating an unpleasant odor, this technology coats the vehicle’s air conditioner evaporator with harmless microbes.

These microbes use biological purification to process unpleasant odor-causing gas ingredients such as volatile organic compounds that can either enter the vehicle from outside or be generated inside a vehicle, thereby keeping the indoor air odor-free.

Eco Coating was verified by the Ministry of Environment, the Korea Institute of Toxicology and the Green Product Evaluation Organization in India, according to the carmaker.

Hyundai also equipped the Santro, a city car model targeting the Indian market, with the technology.

The carmaker said it will expand the application of the Eco Coating technology to a wider range of models.
