SEOUL, Aug. 19 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Motor Co. and affiliate Kia Corp. have kicked off a new mobility service for the transportation vulnerable such as the disabled and elderly people in the U.S.

The two companies announced on Wednesday the launch of EnableLA, a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) ride-hailing service, in Los Angeles, aimed at improving the transportation convenience of mobility disadvantaged people.

Rides can be booked through an exclusive mobile app or over the phone.

Once an application is submitted, professional drivers who are trained to support people with accessibility challenges drive the cars directly to the requested location and take the passengers safely to their destinations.

To this end, the two carmakers formed a partnership with ButterFLi, a Los Angeles-based platform provider for people with accessibility challenges and SMS, a specialist in the employment of professional drivers.

For this pilot program, Hyundai’s Palisade SUV and Kia’s Telluride SUV have been modified to allow wheelchair access.

To comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the modified vehicles feature additional safety equipment with the height of their indoor space being elevated.

The vehicles are also mounted with floor and wheelchair ramps at the rear, aimed at ensuring safe boarding for wheelchair users.
