Hyundai, Kia Take up 10 Pct of U.S. Luxury Auto Market

SEOUL, April 12 (Korea Bizwire) Hyundai Motor Group, the world’s No. 5 auto giant, saw its U.S. sales of luxury sedans more than double on-year in the first quarter, industry data showed Sunday, setting a record-high quarterly share in the segment.

The combined sales of Hyundai Motor‘s premium Genesis and Equus, and Kia Motors‘s K9 in the U.S. moved up 106 percent in the January-March period to 7,566 units, compared to 3,676 units posted a year earlier, the data showed.

Accordingly, the market share of the three luxury sedans also came to 10.4 percent in the high-end segment, hovering above the automotive group’s combined share of 7.9 percent.

By model, the Genesis sedan was the best seller among the three at 6,656 units in the first quarter, soaring from 2,653 units posted a year earlier. The Equus and K9 sold 641 units and 269 units, respectively.

The Genesis luxury sedan, which entered the U.S. market in April 2014, was also the third-most popular automobile in the luxury segment over the cited period, along with the BMW 5-series that sold 12,065 units and Mercedes-Benz E Class cars that sold 11,234 units, the data also showed.
