SEOUL, June 19 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the government to jointly develop and commercialize a next-generation connected digital tachograph for commercial vehicles, the automakers said Thursday.
The automakers, together with the transport ministry and the state-run Korea Transportation Safety Authority, plan to complete the development within the year and apply the new digital tachograph to new commercial vehicle models launching in 2026.
A digital tachograph automatically records a vehicle’s speed, mileage and global positioning system (GPS) data in real time. Installation is mandatory for vehicles used in transportation businesses, including buses, cargo trucks and school vans.
Currently, operators must manually extract and submit driving data from devices or use paid services. The next-generation model aims to automate data storage, analysis and submission by utilizing the automakers’ connected car service platforms.
It is expected to reduce compliance burdens on commercial vehicle operators and increase the overall data submission rate, the automakers said.
