ULSAN, March 17 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. said Wednesday that it had completed the construction of a bunkering vessel designed to fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ships at sea.

The company delivered the K. Lotus, a 18,000 cubic meter LNG bunkering ship, to the Korea Line Corp. on the same day at its headquarters in Ulsan.

The vessel is 166 meters long, 24.4 meters wide, and 12.9 meters high. It comes with a dual fuel engine that uses both marine gas oil and LNG as fuel, which can significantly reduce the emission of hazardous gases including nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide.

It is also equipped with a separate, C-type LNG tank which can safely carry LNG at an extremely low temperature of -163 degrees Celsius.

The vessel’s sub-cooler liquefies boil-off gas, naturally vaporized in the ship’s cargo cell, through temperature and pressure control, injecting it as fuel to the destination ship to maximize energy efficiency and lowering the temperature and pressure to allow for a risk-free LNG fueling service.

The bunkering ship will begin operation at the Port of Amsterdam next month.
