Hyundai Mobis Launches Self-Parking Car Tech

SEOUL, Feb. 7 (Korea Bizwire) Hyundai Mobis is set to begin production of its self-developed Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) and Integrated Mobis Electronic Brake (iMEB) technologies at its Cheonan and Jincheon manufacturing plants, the auto parts supplier said on February 6.

Drivers of vehicles equipped with RSPA will be able to remotely park their ride by pressing down on a button on their smart key, provided that the car is situated near a parking spot and the driver is standing no farther than 4 meters away. When the smart key button is pressed, the RSPA employs 12 different high frequency sound wave sensors to guide the car into the parking spot.

Drivers can also retrieve their car from the parking spot using the same method.

An individual with ties to Hyundai Mobis said, “The production-ready RSPA possesses the best self-parking capabilities in the industry. The success rate in completing parallel parking and parking at an angle is 30 percent higher than competitors’ systems.”

Hyundai Mobis is currently working on an even more advanced parking assistant dubbed Automated Valet Parking (AVP) system that is scheduled to be unveiled before the end of the year. The AVP in theory would allow the driver to disembark, leaving the car to go off on its own to the parking lot and park itself, using high frequency sound wave sensors, cameras, LIDAR, as well as maps and IoT.

The iMEB technology is designed for eco-friendly vehicles and charges the car battery using the electrical power generated when the brakes are used. iMEB’s energy-saving abilities account for up to 40 percent of the improved fuel efficiency of hybrid cars.

Compared to a vehicle equipped with a standard motor, iMEB on an eco-friendly vehicle reduces energy loss by 70 percent.

Hyundai Mobis is the first company domestically, and the second in the world, to complete production preparations for the two technologies.
