SEOUL, May 18 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Motor Group said Tuesday it had signed a two-year deal with SOS Lab, a specialist in solid state light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors, to promote cooperation as part of efforts to accelerate the development of mobile robots.

At present, SOS Lab sells high-resolution 2D/3D LiDAR for use in industrial robots and port security.

Under terms of the agreement, the two parties will develop an exclusive high-resolution 3D LiDAR to optimize the self-driving performances of mobile robots, including Mobile Eccentric Droid (MobED) small mobility platform that Hyundai unveiled in December last year.

The automaking titan will be responsible for hardware design and algorithms, while SOS Lab will provide state-of-the-art high-resolution 3D LiDAR design and software know-how.

Through this partnership, Hyundai plans to miniaturize LiDAR sensors as well as to improve the range of short-distance object recognition, aimed at developing a mobile self-driving robot that can operate more stably on irregular surfaces and between obstacles.
