SEOUL, Dec. 9 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s largest carmaker, launched the EQ900 flagship sedan Wednesday, targeting the global luxury vehicle market mostly dominated by German brands.

The EQ900 is the first model unveiled under the name of Genesis, which Hyundai Motor recently launched as an independent luxury brand.

“The EQ900 is a state-of-the-art premium sedan that we developed to target the global market,” Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Mong-koo said during a launch event in central Seoul.

“Born with all the technology that we have accumulated, along with top-notch performance and product quality, the EQ900 will compete squarely with global top-of-the-line luxury cars,” he added.

As the flagship luxury model, the EQ900 is equipped with diverse up-to-date safety and convenience features designed to maximize customer satisfaction, the company said.

By expanding the portion of ultra-high-strength steel in its body, the EQ900 offers more stability and safety. The company said that it has significantly improved the car’s strength against outside shocks.

The EQ900 is also the first locally produced model equipped with a “highway driving assist system” intended to help autonomous driving. Other safety features, including a crash avoidance system, have also been installed.

The EQ900 is focused on making the driver and passengers feel at ease when driving.

In a bid to reduce the inside noise level, Hyundai Motor said it applied a triple weather strip to its doors and used sound insulation glass on the rear window, the first time for a locally produced vehicle.

By using the latest suspension technology called HVCS, Hyundai Motor said that the EQ900 will make sure that its passengers can enjoy smooth driving and driving performance even at high speeds.

The EQ900 is 5,205 millimeters long and 1,915 mm wide, stands at 1,495 mm and has a wheel base of 3,160 mm. It comes in three types of power train — the Lambda 3.8 V6, the Lambda 3.3 V6 Turbo and the Tau 5.0 V8 — all of which were developed by Hyundai Motor.

Its price ranges from 73 million won (US$62,000) to 117 million won depending on the power train and other options, which is around 5-10 percent more expensive than the previous Equus model.

Hyundai Motor said that it has received about 10,700 preorders for the latest model. It plans to start selling the flagship sedan in global markets, such as the U.S. and the Middle East, next year under the brand name of G90. A company official said that it aims to sell some 20,000 units of the EQ900 globally every year.

In November, Hyundai Motor launched Genesis as an independent global brand designed to target the global luxury vehicle market mostly dominated by such German carmakers as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The automaker plans to develop a total of six Genesis models by 2020.’
