SEOUL, April 13 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Motor Group launched a new service that enables users to open and start a car even if they just have their smartphone in a bag or pocket.
The South Korean auto giant announced that it recently launched a non-contact “Digital Key 2″ service using ultra-wideband (UWB) technology.
Starting from the Genesis brand’s electrified GV60 SUV, the service will be applied selectively for the G90 sedan and follow-up models from Hyundai Motor, Kia Corp. and Genesis.
Customers who purchase models with the service will be able to automatically activate the function through over-the-air (OTA) software updates without the need to make a separate visit to a service center.
Customers will be able to use an updated function if they register their keys to Digital Key 2-compatible Samsung Electronics Co. or Apple Inc. smartphones.
For the first time among automakers, Hyundai Motor Group secured digital key technology that is compatible with both Samsung and Apple models.
In addition, this technology allows users to start the vehicle without the need to put their smartphones on a wireless charger in the vehicle.
It also supports a smart trunk function that automatically opens the trunk if users wait for more than three seconds behind the trunk.
