SEOUL, May 30 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Motor Co. plans to lower the autonomous driving speed limit of all-new G90 flagship sedan under its independent Genesis brand to 60 kilometers per hour in line with international standards.
The South Korean top carmaker is scheduled to release a G90 equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving technology in the fourth quarter of this year, according to industry sources.
There are five levels of driving automation defined by the U.S. Society of Automotive Engineers International.
A Level 3 car allows lane changes and other autonomous driving functions to work without intervention by the driver.
In South Korea, Level 3 self-driving cars are currently allowed to drive up to the speed limit of roads. For instance, they can drive at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour on highways, like other vehicles.
“We decided to lower the speed limit of the G90 to 60 kilometers per hour as part of efforts to comply with international standards as well as to put a priority on safety,” the company said.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (UN/ECE/WP.29) established an international standard limiting the speed of Level 3 autonomous vehicles to 60 kilometers per hour in March 2021.
As the UN/ECE/WP.29 is considering increasing the speed limit for self-driving vehicles, the international standard is expected to be revised soon.
After releasing the G90, Hyundai Motor is expected to adjust its own speed limit through an over-the-air (OTA) software update.
