SEOUL, April 15 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Motor Group on Tuesday revealed a detailed plan for its envisioned waste-to-hydrogen ecosystem project in Indonesia at the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit 2025 held in Jakarta.

The initiative, first announced at CES 2024, aims to create a circular hydrogen ecosystem in West Java, where Hyundai operates a major production hub, by converting organic waste into clean hydrogen.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Indonesian government and Indonesia’s state-run energy firm Pertamina Holdings.

Hyundai Motor said it will work with South Korean landfill development firm Sejin E&E to rehabilitate the Sarimukti landfill in West Java to prevent natural disasters. Biogas extracted from the rehabilitated site will be converted into hydrogen using a hydrogen reformer supplied by Hyundai Rotem Co.

A feasibility study has been completed, and the group is currently in discussions with West Java authorities to begin construction for related infrastructure within the year.

By 2027, a hydrogen reformer and fueling station will be installed on a site provided by Pertamina Holdings, with further cooperation planned for local hydrogen transport and mobility solutions.

The group plans to deploy advanced South Korean hydrogen technologies across the project’s production, storage and fueling via a consortium involving the Korea Testing Certification Institute and the Institute for Advanced Engineering.

“This marks Hyundai’s first overseas expansion of its successful domestic waste-to-hydrogen project,” a group official said, adding that Hyundai hopes to accelerate Indonesia’s transition to a hydrogen society.
