SEOUL, Feb. 19 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Motor Co.’s premium brand Genesis is expected to make its debut in North America in the third quarter, possibly intensifying competition in its high-end vehicle market there, industry sources said Friday.

Genesis has been the name of the most popular luxury sedan of the South Korean auto giant, but it was turned into a separate brand that does not carry the Hyundai emblem last November to better compete with foreign rivals on the global stage with its luxury image.

Hyundai Motor unveiled the EQ900, the top-of-the-line model under the brand, late last year in Korea. It will be sold in overseas markets as the G90, which was showcased at a motor show in the United States in January.

“The G90 is expected to hit showrooms in North America during the third quarter of this year,” an industry source said on the customary condition of anonymity. “Though its exact launch date has not been determined, it will likely debut in August or September.”

Hyundai Motor expects to sell about 5,000 units of the G90 in North America this year. Combined with the existing Genesis DH to be later renamed the G80, the company hopes to sell 30,000 Genesis vehicles.

Hyundai Motor earlier said that it plans to expand the Genesis lineup to six by 2020, which will include mid-sized and sports utility models.’
