SEOUL, June 15 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Oilbank Co., a major South Korean oil refiner, is set to expand its blue hydrogen business by establishing infrastructure for the collection and reuse of the entire amount of carbons generated during the hydrogen production process.

Blue hydrogen features lower carbon emissions by capturing and storing carbon dioxide during the hydrogen production process through a carbon dioxide capturing facility.

Together with a domestic liquid carbon dioxide maker Shinbiochem Co., the company held a ground-breaking ceremony for a liquid carbon dioxide production plant in the general industrial complex in Daejuk, South Chungcheong Province on Monday.

Shinbio Chemical plans to invest 80 billion won by the first half of next year to complete the construction of a plant that will be engaged in the production of carbon gases and dry ice for use in semiconductor manufacturing.

Hyundai Oilbank will capture carbon dioxide generated during the hydrogen production process at its Daesan petrochemical complex in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, and supply 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year to Shinbiochem.

In addition, Hyundai Oilbank plans to establish the blue hydrogen business by recycling the entire amount of carbon dioxide (360,000 tons per year) generated during the hydrogen production process from the first half of next year.

In addition, the company intends to increase the annual sales of blue hydrogen to 100,000 tons by 2025 by targeting hydrogen charging stations and fuel cell power generators.
