SEOUL, Sept. 19 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group reached a double-digit market share in the auto market in Britain for the first time in 40 years.
In the January-August period, Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate Kia Corp.’s market share in Britain marks at 12.3 percent, up by 3.4 percentage points from last year, according to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
It is the first time for a South Korean automaker to reach double-digit market share in Britain since its advance to the European market.
Hyundai surpassed all Japanese competitors including Toyota Motors Corp. (7 percent including Lexus), Nissan Motor Corp. (3.9 percent) and Honda Motor Co. (1.6 percent).
Hyundai and Kia‘s accumulated sales were 124,095 cars between January and August of this year, up by 22.7 percent from last year.
Britain’s 10 bestselling cars included three models from Hyundai Motor Group, including the Kia’s Sportage SUV (5th place), Hyundai’s Tucson SUV (6th place) and Kia’s Niro SUV (9th place).
