SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Steel Co., South Korea’s No. 2 steelmaker, said Tuesday it has succeeded in the trial production of a low-carbon emission high-end steel sheet that enables a significant reduction in carbon emissions during the production process.

The company announced that it had succeeded in the trial production of 1.0 gigapascal (GPa)-class high-end steel sheet and components using an electric arc furnace (EAF).

The high-end steel sheet was developed by leveraging the company’s EAF smelting technology for special steel and ultra-high tensile steel compression technology for automobiles.

It can reduce carbon emissions by more than 30 percent since it uses molten metal made by using direct reduction iron and steel scrap in an EAF instead of the typical practice of reducing iron ore and coal in a general furnace.

Hyundai Steel noted that it used existing facilities rather than new ones to produce the low-carbon emission steel sheet thanks to its know-how in the production of automobile steel sheets and ultra-high tensile steel plates, and cooperation with Hyundai Motor Co.’s research institute.
