ULSAN, July 14 (Korea Bizwire)As part of efforts to tighten discipline at its production lines, Hyundai Motor Co. dismissed a worker who frequently left work early without providing appropriate notice.

South Korea’s biggest carmaker by sales announced on Sunday that a production worker at the company’s Ulsan plant had been fired for having left work early for several months without acknowledging the facts nor giving appropriate reasons.

Hyundai Motor also confirmed that there are other similar cases among production workers and the company is now investigating to see if any other employees have violated company rules.

At Hyundai plants, it has long been conventional practice among production workers to assemble the cars on the conveyer belt in advance without waiting their turn on the line so that they can leave work early.

In late 2019, controversy erupted when some Hyundai workers were caught watching videos on their smartphones using company Wi-Fi during their on-duty hours.

The primary reason why the company decided to fire the delinquent worker is its strong intention to revamp the atmosphere of its production sites.

Hyundai Motor’s labor union is also placing bigger emphasis on quality improvement by stressing the message that clients will leave if quality standards are not met in their eyes.

The union and management of Hyundai Motor issued a joint declaration for quality innovation on June 24.
