SEOUL, Apr. 26 (Korea Bizwire) – Hyundai Motor Company has announced plans to manufacture hybrid vehicles at its upcoming electric vehicle (EV) plant in Georgia, United States, scheduled to commence operations in the latter half of this year.

During a conference call discussing the company’s first-quarter earnings on April 25, Lee Seung Jo, Head of Hyundai’s Corporate Planning and Finance Division, stated, “The HMGMA (Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America) plant, slated to begin operations by the end of this year, was originally intended as an EV-dedicated facility. However, we plan to invest in the facility to enable hybrid vehicle production as well.”

Lee further explained, “In addition to electric vehicles, the demand for hybrid models is rapidly increasing. To address this trend, we will modify the plant’s equipment to accommodate hybrid vehicle production.”

In October 2022, Hyundai initiated the construction of the HMGMA facility, dedicated to electric vehicle manufacturing, in Bryan County, Georgia.

The automaker has previously indicated that EV production at the plant is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of this year, with the official completion ceremony scheduled for the first quarter of 2024.

Regarding hybrid vehicle investments, Lee shared, “Currently, we have mid-size and large hybrid systems in place. However, we are now in the process of developing small hybrid systems as well. Our goal is to equip our entire lineup with hybrid capabilities.”
