SEOUL, March 17 (Korea Bizwire) The government is stepping up to train “prompt engineers” who are tasked with extracting better results from artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said Thursday it will open up a new program to train prompt engineers.

The program trains students on how to ask the AI to come up with a desired result.

“In order for an AI to deliver the best results, we need to train its operators,” a government official said.

“We plan to develop the curriculum based on policy research, and decide whether to have the program at universities, how long the program will take, and whether we will collaborate with the private sector.”

Meanwhile, local AI startup Wrtn Technologies Inc. announced the previous day that it will hire AI prompt engineers for the first time in South Korea, offering up to 100 million won (US$76,710) in annual salary.

“The prompt engineer should be capable of using generative AI, and engage in effective conversations with the AI from a logical, linguistic standpoint,” the company said.

Wrtn plans to recruit new prompt engineers regardless of the candidate’s coding capabilities or experience.
