SEOUL, Dec. 29 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s ICT ministry has embarked on a project to recruit experts and conduct a technological analysis, eyeing the spillover effect caused by ChatGPT, a general-purpose chatbot prototype developed by U.S. research lab OpenAI.

The ministry has reportedly been working with artificial intelligence (AI) experts to study the technological and social impact brought about by ChatGPT.

It has also been studying the AI messenger’s pain points generated in a Korean language environment.

While the industry expects ChatGPT to become a technology that brings us closer to the future, it lacks processing capability in the Korean language.

“The AI doesn’t have enough learning data about the Korean language to come up with quality responses that we see in the English or Japanese versions,” an industry official said.

South Korean internet portal giant Naver Corp.’s AI language model HyperCLOVA, for instance, has 204 billion parameters, whereas OpenAI’s Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) only has 175 billion parameters for the Korean language.

HyperCLOVA also has a 1.96 terabytes Korean language data set, which is 6,500 times larger than that owned by GPT-3.
