GANGNEUNG, July 13 (Korea Bizwire) – Gangneung, a city in Gangwon Province, is hosting the ‘Global Innovator Festa 2016 Gangwon’, a creative idea competition with the theme “When Winter Olympics Meet High-Tech ICT (Information and Communications Technology)”.

It’s also an event to promote creativity and youth start-ups, and to discover new talent and fresh ideas.

The competition, which will take place from July 27 to 29, will be organized by the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning, and operated by Gangwon Province, the Gangwon Center for Creative Economy & Innovation, and the National Information Society Agency.

The event will not only feature an idea competition, but also lectures by ICT industry experts, drone festivals, ICT and VR experience and promotion centers, and will welcome some 500 youth from both Korea and overseas. The ministry also expects at least 30,000 visitors.

The main event, however, is the creative idea competition, which will be divided into two categories: a Drone Hackathon and an IoT Idea-thon.

The Drone Hackathon is focusing on drone making and the potential uses of the aircraft at PyeongChang 2018, as well as resolving various issues in the Gangwon region, including disaster response, safety, agriculture, and tourism.

The IoT Idea-thon, on the other hand, will be a presentation-driven contest for various uses of IoT services for a more successful winter Olympics.

The first place winners of the hackathon and the idea-thon will be awarded 10 million won and 5 million won, respectively, along with award certificates, while winning ideas will also be reflected in future provincial and city policies, and provided with government support in business establishments.

“The event will feature Korea’s first drone hackathon and IoT idea-thon,” said a Gangwon Province official. “The competitions will promote creative and innovative ideas by youth from Korea and abroad, and will serve as an important stepping stone to a more successful, ICT-centered winter Olympics.”
