SEOUL, Aug. 3 (Korea Bizwire)The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Monday that it will launch a campaign to collect leaf springs illegally installed on commercial trucks and recycle them for the production of fences for child safety zones.

Leaf springs are typically installed under the frame of commercial trucks to reduce shock to the wheels. Nonetheless, they are often illegally used as locking pins for the trucks’ cargo compartments.

There have been many cases in which leaf springs have flown off of trucks on the road, causing catastrophic vehicle accidents.

Taking this into consideration, the city government formed a business agreement with Hyundai Motor Co. to collect and recycle the illegal leaf springs.

Hyundai plans to receive applications for the removal of illegal leaf springs from as many as 300 cargo trucks on a first come, first serve basis through its service network, and use the removed leaf springs for the production of safety fences for child safety zones.

The city government will start installing the safety fences in September after deciding where they should be located.
