Imports of Decaffeinated Coffee Set New Record

SEOUL, Feb. 3 (Korea Bizwire) The market for decaffeinated coffee is expanding as the pandemic has prompted consumers to drink more coffee while gaining interest in health.

The Korea Customs Service reported that imports of decaffeinated coffee beans jumped from 3,712 tons in 2020 to 4,737 tons in 2021, an increase of 27.5 percent.

In dollars, imports reached US$46.3 million in 2021, up by 42.3 percent from the previous year.

Consumers who are used to drinking two or three cups of coffee every day are looking for decaffeinated coffee to deal with sleeping disorders.

Online grocery delivery platform Market Kurly reported that last year’s decaffeinated coffee sales jumped by 117 percent from the previous year.

Another online shopping mall Gmarket also reported that last year’s decaffeinated coffee sales jumped by 76 percent from 2019. Sales of decaffeinated coffee capsules also jumped by 59 percent over the same period.
