SEOUL, July 10 (Korea Bizwire)Incheon International Airport Corp. said Sunday it will introduce a new service that enables travelers to swiftly pass through departure gates using facial recognition technology, eliminating the need to present their passports or flight tickets.

The operator of the nation’s largest airport initiated the registration process for facial recognition data on Monday, ahead of the service launch.

To utilize the facial recognition service, travelers can download the ICN Smartpass application, enter their passport information, and capture photos of their faces as instructed.

Once the service is available, travelers can register their flight tickets on the app and effortlessly pass through departure or arrival gates without the need to display their passports or flight tickets.

Additionally, dedicated departure counters have been established specifically for travelers who have pre-registered their facial data.

However, during immigration procedures, travelers are still required to submit their passports.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), biometric systems have the potential to reduce check-in time by 10 percent and boarding time by 40 percent.
