SEOUL, Feb. 20 (Korea Bizwire) – Incheon International Airport, South Korea’s main gateway, saw its record number of daily passengers renewed this week, airport officials said Monday, with a large number of spring vacation travelers.

The number of passengers arriving at and departing from the airport reached 200,868 on Sunday, the highest daily tally since the airport opened in early 2001, according to officials from the state-run Korea Airport Corp.

The previous record of 200,082 was set on July 31 last year.

The daily spike was attributed to a sharp increase in the number of South Koreans going abroad for their spring vacation before the beginning of a new school semester. The return of travelers on long-term trips ahead of the new semester also contributed to the rise, according to the officials.

The number of passengers using the airport has been increasing by an average 7.5 percent every year.

In 2016, some 57.76 million passengers used the airport, up 17.2 percent from the previous year, data showed.
