INCHEON, July 15 (Korea Bizwire) — The Korea Gas Corp.’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Incheon, the world’s largest LNG storage and supply facility, on Thursday held a demonstration of an anti-drone system designed to respond to drone terrorist attacks.
When an unidentified flying object appeared near the LNG terminal, a 1.9-meter-wide, 0.5-meter-tall hydrogen-powered drone immediately took off to send out a warning broadcast.
This hydrogen drone is capable of flying for 120 minutes at a maximum speed of 100 km/h, and is charged with the task of tracking down illegal drones and locating the whereabouts of the operator.
If an illegal drone approaches the LNG terminal within a 200-meter radius, the defending drone is ordered to take the strongest action, which amounts to jamming electronic signals.
The illegal drone, cut off from communication through jamming, will be forced to land, during which a special task force is deployed to apprehend the operator.
“We are capable of neutralizing illegal drones within 10 minutes of discovery,” said an official at the Korea Gas Corp. “We have personnel on standby 24 hours a day.”
The Incheon LNG Terminal is designated as an important national facility and has the highest security rating in South Korea.
Drones can be flown in the airspace near the base. However, unauthorized photography of the base is strictly prohibited.
