SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Korea Bizwire) — Investigators raided the regional police agency in Incheon on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the suicide death of actor Lee Sun-kyun, best known for his role in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite.”
The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency sent investigators to the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency to seize evidence amid suspicions that police leaked details of Lee’s questioning schedules to the media so that his appearances for questioning were highly publicized.
Lee was found dead in his car in central Seoul on Dec. 27 in an apparent suicide, days after he publicly appeared before the police for the third round of questioning into suspicions of using marijuana and other illegal drugs on multiple occasions.
Bong Joon-ho, the director of “Parasite,” and many other members of the country’s culture and entertainment industry issued a statement earlier this month, calling for an investigation into Lee’s death and the alleged leak of investigation information involving the late actor.
During Tuesday’s search, police reportedly confiscated mobile phones of some members of the Incheon police agency’s drug crime investigation division along with documents on Lee’s investigation.
Police plan to analyze the seized material to determine whether internal investigation information was handed over to certain news outlets.
The police, meanwhile, indicted a bar hostess and another woman Tuesday on charges of blackmailing Lee in connection with the drug suspicions and swindling him out of a combined 350 million won (US$262,133).
