SEOUL, Dec. 10 (Korea Bizwire) – The number of monthly active users on two social media platforms of U.S.-based Meta has fallen recently, reflecting the rising woes over fake news and scams on these services, data showed Sunday.

According to the mobile index data from industry tracker IGAWorks, the number of active Instagram users came to 18.65 million in November, dropping for the third consecutive month. The figure is based on data from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

An active user refers to a user who accesses the service at least once in a given month.

The local user count on Facebook dropped to 8.94 million in November — the first time that the local user count on Facebook fell below 9 million since the mobile index began analyzing monthly active users of Instagram and Facebook in May 2020.

This figure had previously fallen below 10 million in February, reaching 9.8 million.

Experts say the latest decline came amid the growing amount of fake news and scam content circulating on the platforms.

Additionally, some users criticize the increasing number of advertisements on their feeds, which overshadow posts from their acquaintances.
