SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of Interior and Safety on Thursday held a demonstration event at Shinsegae Department Store in Daejeon for an indoor navigation system capable of locating destinations within a complex building structure.

The project for indoor navigation of complex building structures has been led by a research team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) since March of this year, as part of the government’s efforts to develop new address-based services.

The building’s interior was rendered through an electronic map, placing room numbers for each lot to specify the address.

The indoor navigation system combines the newly developed electronic map with indoor positioning data (location tracking) and technology (WiFi and BLE methods).

At the demonstration, tools to create address data using construction blueprints as well as so-called “map matching” technology that ensures correct positioning of various interior locations were displayed.

The government hopes that the demonstration will show how this system could assist in looking for stores inside a complex building, and find escape routes in times of emergency.
