International Research Team Develops Super Artificial Muscles

SEOUL, Feb. 2 (Korea Bizwire)A research team from Hanyang University, in collaboration with the University of Texas at Austin and other multinational teams, has developed a unipolar artificial muscle that is three times more powerful than other products.

The joint research team discovered that coating a carbon nanotube with ion-exchange resin can allow for the production of stronger and faster artificial muscles.

Carbon nanotubes in other artificial muscles showed limited performance due to bipolar movements within the available voltage range.

In addition, based on electrochemical principles, faster speed of movement meant smaller size.

The new unipolar artificial muscle, however, is equipped with a carbon nanotube coated with ion-exchange resin, which allows for maximum performance based on unipolar movement within the entire voltage range, and exerts more power by adding speed in movement.

The research team from Hanyang University analyzed the operating principles of artificial muscles and contributed to the development of textile-weaved artificial muscles, paving the way for their use in wearable technology.

The principles of energy creation using artificial muscles are expected to be used in future research related to the development of high-performance artificial muscles.
