SEOUL, Nov. 1 (Korea Bizwire) — Worldwide sales of the IONIQ 5 and EV6, the first dedicated battery electric models from Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Corp., respectively, have exceeded 50,000 units just six months after their release, according to recent data.
Hyundai Motor’s IONIQ 5 was released in April and Kia’s EV6 in August of this year. The former has seen strong demand in the international market; in Australia, the units allocated to the local market sold out within hours.
Designed exclusively as electric vehicles from the outset, the IONIQ 5 and EV6 are built on a dedicated electric skateboard platform called the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which helps them to be much lighter and to be produced with more efficiency.
The two models have received favorable reviews from industry experts. The IONIQ 5 won a 2022 German Car of the Year (GCOTY) award in the “New Energy” category.
German auto magazine Auto Zeitung also picked the IONIQ 5 as the best electric car last month, with the Hyundai beating formidable competitors including the BMW iX3 and Audi Q4 e-tron.
The IONIQ 5 also won four categories at the new car awards presented by the British auto magazine Auto Express, including “2021 Car of the Year,” “Best Midsize Car,” “Best Premium Electric Vehicle” and “Best Design.”
