IP Office Reports Surge in Patents for CPR Safety Belts

DAEJEON, Sept. 23 (Korea Bizwire)Patents involving safety belts with a function to carry out cardiopulmonary resuscitation are increasing in number as research in the area is gaining speed.

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) reported that there were 104 patents related to safety belts over the last four years, which is more than double the number submitted between 2010 and 2014.

Among all safety belt patents submitted between 2010 and 2018, 36.5 percent dealt with safety belt monitoring systems, followed by smart safety belt smart systems (36.9 percent), and safety belt design (27.6 percent).

One of the most popular smart systems related to safety belts is technology that uses safety belts to monitor the heart condition of the driver, and conduct resuscitation when the driver suffers from cardiac arrest.

At 84 percent, the vast majority of all patents submitted in the last nine years were submitted by South Korean citizens.

Among them, 33 percent were from large conglomerates, and 19 percent were from small to medium-sized corporations.

“Research and development of technology related to safety belts is expected to gain more speed as it has become mandatory for all drivers to wear safety belts,” said Baek On-ki, head of Automobile Examination Division at the KIPO.
