JEJU, South Korea, Sept. 3 (Korea Bizwire) — Jeju Island, already home to the nation’s first carbon-free “RE100 eggs,” has introduced another sustainability milestone: milk produced entirely with renewable energy.

On Wednesday, Jeju Milk, an agricultural company based on the island, officially launched South Korea’s first RE100-certified milk, marking a significant step toward carbon neutrality in livestock farming.

The designation follows the company’s contracts under the “green premium” electricity pricing program and registration with the Korea Energy Agency, which issued a renewable energy usage certificate last month.

The new product retails for 4,400 to 4,600 won ($3.20–$3.40) per 900 milliliters — roughly 30 percent more expensive than regular milk — and is available at Lotte Mart stores nationwide and online.

“After pioneering RE100 eggs, Jeju has now introduced RE100 milk, writing a new chapter in carbon-neutral livestock farming,” said Jeju Governor Oh Young-hun at the launch event.

He pledged expanded incentives for certified farms, emphasizing the island’s aim to help producers secure stable revenue while building a sustainable livestock industry.

Since Jeju’s first egg farm received RE100 certification in 2024, five additional operations — including dairy and egg farms and a dairy processor — have joined.

The island government plans to expand the program to 66 certified farms by 2030, providing support for renewable energy facilities, premium electricity costs and farm supplies.

The initiative underscores Jeju’s ambition to serve as a model for sustainable agriculture, linking local food production with the island’s broader renewable energy transition.
